All senior citizens should be treated with kindness and respect in their golden years – and certainly the veterans who fought bravely for our country in past years should be given a retirement that is comfortable, safe, and caring. However, recent charges against two nursing home employees at aTexas veterans home have many wondering how wide-spread nursing home veteran abuse is.
After a two-and-a-half year investigation, two Big Spring nursing home staffers who worked in the Alzheimer’s Unit of the Lamun-Lusk-Sanchez Texas State Veteran's Home have been indicted for elderly patient abuse. The investigation involved a number of different government agencies and entities, including an attorney general, Big Springs police, and a Howard County District Attorney. However, once everyone was on the same page, 25-year-old Bryson O'Neil Vanderbilt and 52-year-old Connie Mae Johnson were indicted by a Howard County grand jury for their alleged 2007 abuse of veteran nursing home patients under their care.
If they are found guilty of TX nursing home abuse, they could face fines up to $10,000 each and up to 20 years in jail.
While the details of the abuse have not been released, the veteran’s home insists that none of the residents were ever at risk due to the abuse and that they are working diligently to prevent similar incidents from occurring. The Texas nursing home has fired the abusers, disciplined others, and re-trained the rest of their staff in order to curb abuse. In addition the nursing home was responsible for first contacting the police regarding the elder abuse.
