Dallas saw another police officer injured during a high-profile motorcade this week, this time involving a visit from President Barak Obama.
The Dallas motorcycle accident took place at four in the afternoon on Monday and involved nine-year police force veteran Senior Corporal Michael Manis. The bike accident took place as Manis was exiting a toll road, lost control of his bike, and flipped over a median, suffering serious but non-life-threatening injuries. He was taken to Parkland Hospital in Dallas, where he was listed in stable condition and stayed overnight. He suffered road rash on his arm and hand and suffered a head injury when he fell off of the bike.
At the time of the motorcycle accident, Manis was completing a “leap frog” maneuver, where one motorcycle officer speeds ahead of the others to stop traffic and let the motorcade though.
Motorcade accidents are strangely common, especially when involving notable politicians:
• In 2008, a Dallas motorcade for Hillary Clinton resulted in the death of a Dallas police officer, 49-year-old Senior Cpl. Victor Lozada. Lozada failed to negotiate a curve and slammed into a concrete barrier.
• Last week, Vice President Joe Biden’s motorcade experienced and accident in New York.
• In 2006, three Honolulu motorcycle police officers escorting President George W. Bush crashed and sustained injuries.
• In 2007, President George W. Bush was involved in another fatal motorcade accident in New Mexico when a motorcycle police officer crashed while escorting the politician to a fundraiser.
