Dallas Toddler Dies After Heparin Medication Error At Hospital

Posted on Apr 29, 2010

A Dallas couple is mourning the death of their 23-month-old baby after the hospital where the child was receiving medical treatment accidentally gave the girl a deadly overdose of the blood thinner Heparin.

News reports say that Texas couple Greg and Kenya Duque traveled to the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha because of the hospital’s reputation for multiple organ transplant surgeries and intestine surgeries. Their almost-two-year-old girl Almariah, was in need of a liver, kidney, and bowel transplant after a lifetime of medical complications.

While the surgery went well, the child was readmitted to the hospital with an infection almost two months later and was given, the hospital believes, a deadly dose of the controversial blood thinner. The hospital has admitted its mistake, offered its apologies, and agreed to pay for the baby’s funeral costs. However, the parents may need more than an apology for the deadly medical mistake that took away their child.

Unfortunately, Heparin overdoses are far too common in Texas – and children and infants are often the victims of these cases of TX medical malpractice. Just two years ago, 14 babies in a neonatal unit in Corpus Christi, Texas, received overdoses of the blood thinner and two babies died as a result of the medical mistake. A number of parents, including actor Dennis Quaid, have sued the manufacturer of Heparin, Baxter International, saying that their labels were difficult to read correctly. In addition, others have complained that since the blood thinners are packaged for adults, it can be far too easy for a doctor or nurse to give a child a safe and effective dose of the medicine.
