Daughter Files Texas Med Mal Lawsuit After Father Bleeds To Death

Posted on Dec 23, 2010

A daughter in Jefferson County, Texas, has filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against two hospitals and two doctors following the death of her father in the wake of a heart surgery.

According to the Southeast Texas Record and court reports, David Barrow underwent a heart procedure in April 2009. A few days after the operation, the man was suffering from pain and was admitted to Memorial Hermann Hospital where he was seen by Dr. Derrick Myers. He was then transported to Christus Hospital St. Elizabeth, where he was under the care of Dr. Steven Sooudi.

The medical mistake and wrongful death lawsuit, which was filed by Barrow’s daughter, Kathy Keegan, states that there was no clear reason for Barrow’s transfer to the second hospital, where medical professionals found a large hematoma in his groin and thigh. Hours later, he was dead.

According to Keegan’s medical expert witness, Barrow’s death was caused by a leaking catheter insertion and that he should have been treated for this complication immediately at the first hospital he was taken to. In addition, the second hospital failed to properly diagnose and properly treat Barrow’s medical issue, which was the direct cause of his death.

Since the medical malpractice trial began, Dr. Myers has tried to dismiss the case twice, saying that the medical expert report provided by Keegan is not sufficient and that the medical witness is not qualified to testify regarding medical emergency surgeries. The judge denied the motion but as asked the Keegan to amend the medical witness report.
