Driver Found Guilty After Killing Plano Family In Car Crash

Posted on Sep 30, 2010

A man was found guilty of five counts of manslaughter with a deadly weapon after slamming into the van of a church-going family in Plano two years ago. He faces up to 20 years in prison for the Texas car accident.

Texas Police say that 48-year-old David Calhoun Jones was speeding at over 100 miles per hour and driving recklessly in Plano when he lost control of his rented Pontiac, went airborne, and crashed into a minivan carrying a husband, a wife, and their three children. Geoff Hart and Christy Hart, both of Plano, were killed instantly in the crash, while their 12-year-old daughter Rebeka Hart also died at the scene of the car accident. The couple’s two foster children, 6-year-old Kevinnesha Palmer and five-year-old Raven Lucas were rushed to hospitals were they both later died of their injuries. Jones was paralyzed in the accident and has spent the last two years in hospitals and rehabilitation centers.

During the trial, Jones’ lawyer argued that the brakes on his car failed, but no evidence of brake malfunction was found in the car. In addition, several witnesses to the crash reported that Jones was speeding far beyond the legal limit and swerving dangerously in and out of traffic shortly before the crash.

Jones is seeking probation as his sentence, while prosecutors are pushing for significant jail time as well as a hefty fine.
