Famed Preacher Dies In Head-On Crash With Big Rig In Texas
Posted on May 09, 2011
A well-known preacher has died in an East Texas car accident this week. According to the Associated Press, 79-year-old Rev. David Wilkerson was driving on a two-lane highway about 100 miles outside of Dallas near Cuney, Texas, when he drifted across the double-yellow center line and into oncoming traffic. The car hit an 18-wheeler commercial truck head-on, killing the man and injuring his wife. It is not clear why Wilkerson’s car crossed into the other lane, though the accident is under investigation.
The fatal Texas car accident took place on Wednesday afternoon on US 175. Wilkerson was not wearing a seat belt, but his wife, Gwendolyn, was. She has been reported to be in stable condition at the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The couple has four children. His family has released a statement thanking the public for prayers and stating that they believe Wilkerson had gone to Jesus.
Reverend David Wilkerson founded the Times Square Church in New York City in 1987, at a time when the area was known for crime and adult stores. He was also the author of The Cross and the Switchblade, a book about preaching to gang members and drug addicts during the early years of his career.
