DIMMITT, TX (08/04/2015) — One person was killed and one was critically injured following a head-on truck accident along Highway 385 Tuesday afternoon.
According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, 83-year-old Feliberto Sontoya Sepeda was killed, and 78-year-old Eva Correa Sepeda was critically injured after the intoxicated driver of an 18-wheeler veered into oncoming traffic and struck their vehicle along Highway 385 near Dimmitt, Texas on Tuesday afternoon.
DPS stated that shortly after 1:30 p.m., 59-year-old Everett Monroe West was traveling northbound on Highway 385 in a Freightliner semi-truck (towing a 1998 Lufkin dump trailer) when he crossed the center line and struck Sepeda’s 2005 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck.
The impact claimed the life of Feliberto Sepeda.
Eva Sepeda, who was a passenger in the Chevrolet, was transported to Northwest Texas Hospital in critical condition. West was taken to Castro Regional Medical Center in Dimmitt, where he has since been treated and released.
According to authorities, West was then arrested for intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault. He has been booked into Castro County jail.
It’s unconscionable to think that anyone would get behind the wheel of an 18-wheeler while intoxicated. Far too many lives are lost due to drunk drivers in Texas, and I hope that this man is held fully accountable for his egregious actions.
Our thoughts go out to the Sepeda family during this difficult time.
