Former Dallas Mayor Ron Kirk Hurt In I-30 Car Accident

Road Debris and an unsecured load were to blame for a Texas car accident on I-30 that involved former Dallas Mayor and current U.S. trade representative Ron Kirk. Kirk escaped the Dallas car accident with only a flash wound on his left bicep, but the car wreck shines light on the danger of unsecured loads and road debris on Texas highways and freeways.

Kirk was driving on Interstate 30 in Grand Prairie near Belt Line road when a tractor-trailer in front of him struck a ladder that was lying in the road. The ladder bounced off of the road and crashed through Kirk’s windshield, striking the driver. The early morning TX car accident was caught on a Texas Department of transportation I-30 camera, but unfortunately the cameras provide a live feed but do not record. Texas State Police do not know where the ladder came from and have no leads on the case. They are asking witnesses to come forward if anyone saw a ladder fall of a vehicle or if anyone has more information. Those with leads should call 972-237-8790.

It is Texas state law to appropriately secure loads onto your vehicle.

The Dallas News reports that unsecured loads and road debris are a real problem on Texas roads – according to data provided by TexDOT, over 1,000 car accidents are caused by unsecured loads in Texas each year. In 2008, eight people died as a result of an unsecured load accident and over 200 people suffered serious injuries.
