Forth Worth Nursing Home Under Fire After Patient Dies

Posted on Nov 29, 2010

The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services has cited neglect as a factor in the death of a 23-year-old man who was a patient at a Forth Worth nursing home.

According to the Star-Telegram, Evan Fleming stopped breathing at Texas nursing home DFW Nursing & Reahab, but that his attending nurses did not know whether the young man had a do not resuscitate order in his medical records. They left him unattended and without oxygen for seven minutes as they scrambled to discover whether or not it was appropriate for them to administer CPR. When they finally tried to revive the man, it was too late. In addition, seven nurses in the area during the medical emergency were not certified to administer CPR.

Fleming was attending college in Fort Worth and working as a waiter when he was involved in a single-vehicle car accident last summer in which he suffered serious injuries, including a traumatic brain injury. He was treated for his ailments at a local hospital and then moved to DFW Nursing & Rehabilitation just a week before he died.

Further investigation by Texas officials found that 43 residents in the nursing home did not have correct or present do not resuscitate orders and could have also suffered the same fate as Fleming.

Since the nursing home negligence incident, the nursing home has worked to fix a number of mistakes found during inspection. Red dots were placed on patients’ wrists to signify whether or not they have a resuscitation order and all medical charts were also similarly flagged.
