Galveston Woman Sues Doctor After Surgical Sponge Left In Abdomen
Posted on Jan 31, 2011
Last year, Phaedra R. Mills of Galveston County, Texas, was struggling with pain and discomfort in her lower abdomen. When she sought medical help, she was shocked to discover that her suffering was caused by a medical sponge that was left behind by a doctor six years earlier during a c-section operation.
According to court documents filed in Galveston County, Millis went to Mainland Medical Center in Texas City in November of 2003 to have a child. When she required a cesarean section, Dr. Janice Crowded took care of the procedure alone, allegedly leaving behind a surgical sponge in her abdominal cavity.
More than six years later, in January 2010, Millis had to have the sponge surgically removed after years of unexplained pain and complications. She is suing the doctor for an unspecified amount.
The lawsuit states that Millis believes that the doctor was negligent in disclosing the dangers and risks that surround a c-section operation – and that Millis did not have the opportunity to properly give or withhold consent.
While finding a surgical sponge in your abdomen years after a surgery sounds like a freak medical error, it is actually more common than you may think. In fact, each year hundreds of former surgery patients are shocked to discover that their post-operation discomfort is caused by foreign objects that have been left behind by careless surgeons. In almost all cases, these are instances of negligence and medical malpractice.
