Grayson County Family Files Surgical Fire Medical Malpractice Lawsuit

Posted on Jul 31, 2011

A Texas family has filed a medical malpractice lawsuit against a hospital, a doctor, and an anesthesiologist after they say their loved one died after a surgery fire that should have been prevented.

In 2009, 83-year-old Selah Rose Lewis Schulze went to a medical center to have a pacemaker implanted. However, during the routine operation, Schulze was badly burned by a surgical fire and the implant never took place. The elderly woman was transferred to another hospital in critical condition and had to undergo a long recovery and several more reconstructive surgeries after the alleged medical error took place. While she survived, her quality of life was greatly affected by the incident and she died in 2010.

The lawsuit states that the surgical fire was caused by a cauterizer used by the surgeon as well as high oxygen levels, and perhaps excess skin prep cleanser. It also states that none of the medical professionals in the operating room that day upheld the standard of care.

Schulze’s family has filed a Grayson County medical malpractice lawsuit against a number of parties, including Texoma Medical Center, surgeon Dr. Robert Wilcott, and anesthesiologist Dr. Mark Villareal. They are seeking damages for scarring, pain and suffering, negligence, and mental anguish.
