Hit-And-Run Driver Strikes And Kills Two Children In Mount Pleasant

Posted on May 24, 2011

A hit-and-run driver without a valid drivers’ license killed two young children in Mount Pleasant this week. The man, 21-year-old Edward Moya, was found after the fatal pedestrian accident, arrested, and charged with two counts of manslaughter and two counts of injury to a child. A grand jury will now hear his case and decide if additional charges are warranted.

The fatal Texas pedestrian accident took place at the corner of Jefferson street at Patrick Street in Mount Pleasant, where a memorial of teddy bears, candles, and flowers now marks the location of the collision. Two cousins, 13-year-old Jocelyn Roberts and 4-year-old Kameron Jones-Wheeler were leaving the movie theater on Saturday afternoon when they were struck down by Moya, who did not stop to help the injured children. Witnesses report that in the seconds before the crash, Roberts shielded her smaller cousin from the impact of the crash.

Jones-Wheeler died at the scene of the crash, while Roberts was rushed to a Dallas hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Her parents say that she is donating her organs and has already improved the lives of six other children. While both families mourn, Roberts’ mother says that she is trying to focus on the happy times she had with her daughter and to understand that everything that happens has a purpose.
