The TIME to ACT is NOW.

Although many people are familiar with the signs of nursing home abuse and neglect, far fewer are familiar with the red flags of financial elder abuse – even doctors and other medical professionals. To combat this problem, and to save many families from the pain of financial scams and lost life savings, researchers working at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston have developed a system to train medical professionals to recognize victims of fraud and report suspected instances of financial exploitation to the Texas Securities Board.
The pilot project launched six months ago, and now 67 doctors participate in protecting Texas elders from financial scams and financial abuse. Already, the scientists at Baylor believe that elders have been saved from becoming victims of financial abuse and have planned to expand their program to 30 more states in the near future.
Unfortunately, seniors and nursing home residents are increasingly susceptible to fraud, scams, and financial schemes as they age. Not only do the elderly often find themselves lonely or bored, researchers have also determined that many undergo changes in their brain that make them more susceptible to financial fraud than when they were younger. In other cases, seniors suffering from dementia or Alzheimer’s may be stolen from by a nurse, staff member, or family member, without their knowledge.
Hopefully, the new pilot program launched in Houston will make more medical providers aware of these risks and save a significant number of seniors from losing what they have worked their whole lives for.
