Houston Police Officer Struck By Car While Investigating Accident
Posted on May 30, 2011
A Houston Police Officer was struck and killed by an alleged drunk driver this week while he was investigating a recent hit-and-run accident on Loop 610 North. The peace officer, 38-year-old Kevin Will, leaves behind a pregnant wife and two stepchildren, ages six and ten.
According to the Houston Chronicle, Will was collecting evidence from the scene of a recent traffic accident that happened late on Saturday night when a driver ignored both the flashing lights of Will’s squad car and a barrier blocking the freeway. In the second before the car struck, Will shouted at the witness he was interviewing to get out of the way. The witness jumped to safety, while Will was struck.
The driver of the car, 26-year-old Johoan Rodriguez, charged with intoxication manslaughter of a peace officer, felony evading, and cocaine possession. He is in Harris County jail, where he is also being investigated by Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Fellow members of the Houston Police Department described Will as an honest, hardworking man who loved being a police officer and who was looking forward to being a father. Houston Police Chief Charles McClelland added that it is even more of a tragedy that the car accident occurred on Memorial Day, a time when we should honor those in uniform.
