Kaufman County Chain-Reaction Crash On I-20 Kills 3, Injures 4

A tragic, fiery Memorial Day weekend crash in Kaufman County left three dead and four injured on Interstate 20 near Wills Point and Terrell. While brave bystanders managed to pull some to safety, dangerous flames prevented them from saving everyone involved.

Witnesses told the Dallas News that a Toyota 4Runner was driving on I-20 on Friday evening when a tractor-trailer rammed into the back of the vehicle. The SUV burst into flames before hitting another car and another 18-wheeler before coming to a stop. The SUV reportedly was carrying a couple and their two children. The mother was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene of the accident, while the two children were trapped in the burning car and killed. The driver of the car, a man, was pulled to safety by a bystander.

Two women in the other car involved were seriously injured in the TX car accident as well – one was flown to Parkland Memorial Hospital by medical helicopter in critical condition while three other injured people were transported to other area hospitals by ambulance. It is not clear why the big rig slammed into the car – though the I-20 truck accident could have involved faulty brakes or a sudden stop by the SUV. The fatal chain-reaction car accident is still under investigation.

All lanes of Eastbound I-20 were closed as investigators examined the accident scene and cleaned up debris. Traffic was backed up for an estimated 15 miles.
