Lufkin Nursing Home Patient Assaulted By Staff Member

Posted on Sep 29, 2010

A nursing home patient in Lufkin, Texas, was assaulted by a nurse’s assistant last month. The woman who assaulted the elderly resident was turned in by two other employees at the nursing home, arrested, and charged with a second-degree felony, injury to the elderly.

The incident took place on August 21, when staff members at the Grace Care nursing home in Lufkin, heard a slapping noise coming from the room of an 83-year-old patient.  By the time they entered the room, they heard the women hit five times and observed that 43-year-old Sherree Denise James was pulling the elderly woman’s ear and hair. They also observed a bump on the woman’s head. In addition, James told the two employees that she often bent the woman’s thumb backward in order to get her to cooperate.

The Department of Aging and Disability Services is investigating the nursing home abuse incident with help from Lufkin Police – including whether or not the nursing home itself was in any way responsible for the nursing home assault. At this point, authorities do not believe the nursing facility was at fault and say that the other residents are safe from harm.

Sherree had worked for Grace Care nursing for about a year and had never been disciplined before. The elderly resident was taken to the hospital but was returned to the nursing home that night and is not suffering from further injury.
