Lufkin Nursing Home Worker Exposes Himself To Resident

Posted on Dec 21, 2010

A Lufkin, Texas, man has been arrested by police after he allegedly exposed himself to an elderly woman at the nursing home where he worked and then assaulted the woman after she refused to comply with his request.

According to local news sources, 25-year-old Telesforo Vasquez III was a staff member at Castle Pine Rehabilitation Center, which is located on West Frank Avenue in Lufkin. On November 24, Lufkin Police say that the man exposed his genitals to a 91-year-old resident and told her to touch them. When she refused, he pushed her to the ground, injuring her hip and backside.

The nursing home would not comment publically on the case, but the police report reveals that the nursing home interviewed the victim, observed her injuries, and fired the worker after concluding their own investigation.

Vasquez has been charged with injury to the elderly and attempted sexual assault. He is being held in jail on a $150,000 bond in Angelina County.

The Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services lauded Castle Pine for reporting the nursing home abuse incident to authroties as the law requires, but said that many sexual assault incidents are never reported by adult care centers.

Elder sexual abuse in nursing homes is more common than many Texans might think. In many cases, seniors are too ashamed or embarrassed to report sexual harassment from staff members or other residents. In other cases, elderly residents may suffer from dementia or other conditions that make it impossible to report sexual abuse.
