Odessa Cardiologist Faces Texas Medical Malpractice Suit Over Stent

Posted on Aug 21, 2010

One of the most prominent heart doctors in Texas is facing a medical malpractice lawsuit after one of his patients died on the operating table. The family of the patient say that their loved one’s life could have and should have been saved.

In 2008, 81-year-old Ofelia Hinojos of Odessa went to the doctor complaining of shortness of breath and chest pressure. Prominent Odessa cardiologist Dr. Suresh Gadasalli performed heart surgery after a blockage was detected. However, during the procedure, as the doctor was inserting a stent, the cardiologist accidentally perforated an artery, causing blood to pool in a cavity in her heart. She died of the complication. Her family believes that her doctor should have recognized the complication and corrected it, while the doctor says that it was an unfortunate complication that happens to even the best heart doctors.

Hinojos’ family said, though their medical malpractice lawyer, that Dr. Gadasalli should have seen the issue – and that several staff members in the operating room saw the mistake and didn’t say anything. However, the Texas Medical Board, who heard the case last year, did not suspend the doctor’s license. Instead, they determined that Gadasalli should take five hours of medical classes and work on his interpersonal skills – a problem that they believe led to the heart surgery death.

Gadasalli has performed several notable heart surgeries over the years – but colleagues say that his prominence makes him difficult to talk to and that others in the operating room may be too intimidated to point out medical errors – even deadly ones.
