Paralyzed Texas Woman Gives Birth After Deadly Car Accident
Posted on Apr 29, 2011
Seven months after a Houston woman was paralyzed in a horrific car accident that killed her sister and grandmother, 29-year-old Krystal Pierre has given birth to what doctors are calling a miracle baby.
The Texas car accident, which took place last year, happened when Pierre was just two months pregnant – a time when doctor’s say the fetus was small and well-protected enough to survive the serious crash that took two other people’s lives. And while Pierre was paralyzed in the crash from the breastbone down, she was still able to feel contractions during labor and have a vaginal birth. During her pregnancy, she had four surgeries related to her car wreck injuries.
She has named her son TJ, after the baby boy’s father, Tony Joseph Pierre. The baby was born healthy, though he is missing a bone in his leg that will later require surgery. Doctors say that the missing bone is not related to the car accident.
Pierre, the only survivor of the car crash that took two family members, said that finding out that she was still pregnant after the car accident was bittersweet – she had just lost two important women in her life and had suffered a miscarriage two years before. She feels almost as if her sister and grandmother gave their lives to her new baby.
According to doctors, paralyzed women can often have healthy pregnancies and healthy, natural labors as long as a number of specific precautions are taken.
