Rangers Fan Dies After Fall At Baseball Stadium

Posted on Jul 12, 2011

Brownwood Central Firefighter Shannon Stone died following a fall at the Texas Rangers baseball stadium in Dallas last week. The 39-year-old man was attempting to catch a baseball thrown by player Josh Hamilton when he lost his balance and toppled over a railing in the stands over left field.

Stone, who had been a firefighter for the last 18 years, was at the game with his six-year-old son, Conner. He fell 20 feet to a slab of concrete below. After the fall, he was briefly conscious and asked for bystanders to make sure his son was being looked after. He was rushed to a nearby hospital by emergency responders, but was pronounced dead of blunt force trauma shortly after arrival.

A memorial service took place this week in which hundreds of friends, fellow firefighters, and loved ones gathered to celebrate Stone’s life and mourn his death.

Six people have died in baseball stadiums across the country in the last three years – and a number of others have suffered serious injuries in falls from stands or while sliding down railings. Still, the Rangers have come out and said that they will continue the practice of throwing some balls into the stands for fans as Josh Hamilton did last week.
