Posted on Sep 24, 2011
A San Jacinto College student and professional soccer hopeful was killed in a two-car auto accident in Houston this week.
According to the Houston Chronicle, 18-year-old Jose Perez was traveling in the back seat of a teammate's car and on his way to soccer practice early on Tuesday morning when the driver of the BMW he was in failed to stop at a red light at the intersection of Beamer Road and Astoria Boulevard. The car was struck by an oncoming sedan with the right-of-way, causing the BMW to flip and roll. Jose was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the accident.
While the three other students in the car sustained only minor injuries in the Texas car crash, Jose died of his injuries, ending his dreams of becoming a soccer star and providing for his family. The standout athlete was selected as a member of the U.S. under-17 national team and was a starter for FC Dallas soccer club's developmental team.
Houston Police are investigating the accident to pinpoint what caused the driver to miss the red light. Although the investigation has not been completed, authorities have said that they do not believe alcohol was a factor in the crash and that no evidence of drinking has been found.
The loss of any life in such a tragic manner is devastating, especially when the deceased was so young and full of potential. Our thoughts are with the friends and family of Jose Perez through this difficult time.
