Seven People Critically Injured As Ice Falls Off Dallas’ Cowboys Stadium

Posted on Feb 07, 2011

As the Philadelphia Steelers and the Green Bay Packers gear up for the 2011 Super Bowl, authorities are scrambling to ensure that the stadium where the NFL Championship game will take place is safe. After a freak snow and ice storm slammed the Dallas area this week, seven people were injured by ice sliding off the Cowboys Stadium.

According to the Dallas News and several witnesses, the sound of crumbling ice was as loud as a jet engine as literal tons of debris from the winter storm fell on to a handful of people at the stadium on Friday. The snow and ice, which fell earlier in the week, slid off of the roof in sheets as temperatures in Arlington rose on Friday morning.

Seven people were seriously injured in by the ice. Getty photographer Win McNamee, who was at the stadium to take pictures of the wintery stadium, broke his shoulder in four places and will require surgery. Another victim of the accident spent the night in the hospital receiving treatment for injuries.

NFL and stadium authorities quickly mobilized to confront the problem of ice dangers, which officials said they had not yet had to deal with because of the mild climate of Texas and the newness of the stadium. Soon after the accident and injuries, helicopters flew over the stadium to pinpoint dangerous icy areas of the roof and the areas below were quickly restricted from use. Event planners are confident that the problem should no longer exist by the time Super Bowl Sunday arrives.
