Texas Home Daycare Owner In Jail After Suspicious Child Death
Posted on Dec 20, 2010
A Texas in-home daycare owner has been arrested in Hays County after a 10-week-old child was fatally injured while under her care. The woman, 32-year-old Christina Suzanne Lyons, was charged with first-degree injury to a child, but could also be charged with murder in the coming weeks.
According to the Hays Free Press, infant Benjamin Spencer suffered a serious brain injury and multiple broken ribs while under the care of Lyons at Little Lyons Club Daycare in Kyle, Texas. Lyons says that she placed Spencer on a couch, 24 inches off of the ground, while she went to the rest room. When she came back, the child was face up on the floor and having trouble breathing. The daycare abuse incident took place on November 18 and Benjamin died of his injuries on Thanksgiving at a local hospital.
Texas Police and medical professionals say that the injuries sustained by the baby were not likely caused by an accidental fall and were probably no accident at all. Lyons had six other children in her care on the day of the injury.
Lyons was released on $50,000 bail in the days after the charges, but then turned herself in to Hays County authorities after her bail was increased to $500,000. She has not hired a lawyer or asked for legal counsel at this point in time.
The baby’s parents, Duane and Robin Spencer, also have a three-year-old daughter and are employed at Simon Middle School and a local nursing home, respectively.
