Texas Living Center Improves After Neglect And Abuse Allegations

Posted on Nov 30, 2010

A Dallas nursing facility that cares for the mentally disabled is showing significant improvement after being cited multiple times for nursing home neglect and abuse in recent years. The many changes in their standard of care come after an investigation by the Texas Department of Justice and threats of a TX nursing home neglect and abuse lawsuit.

The Lubbock State Supported Living Center was suffering from dangerously low staffing numbers, a lack of proper supervision, poor conditions, and multiple abuse accusations before state officials stepped in.

Currently, after working to improve their conditions for the last year, the adult care facility now has more staff positions filled and now boasts a zero-tolerance policy regarding elder abuse and neglect. They have 78 percent of their nursing positions filled and have also filled dentist and doctor positions that went empty for far too long. In addition, the nursing home has reorganized their residents so that those with severe behavioral disorders were spread throughout the facility instead of grouped in a single section.

However, everyone agrees that the Lubbock State Supported Living Center still has a long way to go and many more improvements to make before anyone should celebrate. According to the Department of Family and Protective Services, seven reports of verbal abuse, physical abuse, or neglect have been confirmed at the care center and eleven staff memebers have been fired in relation to these incidents. In another incident, a patient with pica, a condition that involves eating inedible objects, was left alone with non-food items that he subsequently swallowed.
