One man is dead and another has been hospitalized following a Texas boat accident near the town of Noonday.
According to local news sources, 64-year-old Tommy Cook of Overton and 61-year-old Mike Ammons of New London left for a fishing trip early on Wednesday on Lake Palestine. When the pair did not return that evening, the authorities were called in to search for the boat.
The Texas Department of Public Safety responded to the call, and a DPS helicopter soon spotted Cook's body in the lake. Soon after, officers found Ammons-alive, but suffering from hypothermia. Ammons, who looped his belt around a stump in the lake, was taken to a hospital in Tyler where he is listed in good condition. Both men were wearing life jackets.
During an interview, Ammons told reporters that he had tried to save his friend by holding him up by his belt loops, but that Cook had suffered a heart attack or some other medical emergency. He let go of the body when he knew his friend was dead. Ammons also told authorities that the boat accident took place when high winds caused waves to fill the boat with water.
