The Lubbock State Supported Living Center is under fire after a new report has revealed more abuse and neglect problems at the hugely under-staffed home for the mentally challenged.
According to Dallas News, the Texas mental health institution was investigated after a mentally ill man wondered from the Lubbock State Supported Living Center in 14-degree weather and was found naked and covered in feces before the hospital even knew the man was missing. In another case, a patient was found to have a coin lodged in their lower intestines, and though the problem was noted in their medical file, no action was taken.
The Lubbock living center authorities and Texas state monitors agree that many of the adult care facility neglect problems found are directly related to nursing shortages. Many explain that the institution is only half-staffed currently and that the turnover rate for employment is extremely high due to poor conditions and low pay. Nurses are often overworked and overwhelmed, leading to medication errors, patient elopements, mistakes in record keeping, and other cases of abuse and neglect. In the last six months alone, 13 employees have been fired after incidents of care facility abuse and care facility neglect.
The independent monitors, which are associated with the Texas Justice Department, also said that some improvements have been made and that they are impressed with how nurses are faring with such shortages. The monitors will return in six months to reevaluate the state mental health facility. The living center has until 2013 to completely comply with Justice Department standards.
