Texas Tech Student Charged after Fatal Lubbock Vehicle Accident
Posted on Feb 25, 2012
A Texas Tech University student has been indicted on three counts of aggravated assault and intoxication manslaughter after he allegedly caused a fatal Lubbock car accident in January.
According to local news sources, 26-year-old Brian Hawthorne was at the wheel of a pickup truck in the early-morning hours of January 26 as he drove the vehicle down University Avenue near Texas Tech. The Lubbock Avalanche Journal reported that the vehicle struck a curb, rolled, and killed two occupants—27-year-old Kendrick Lamaar Johnson and 23-year-old Arturo Hernandez Almaguer. In addition, 68-year-old Courtland Whitmore, a cyclist who was on his commute home from work, was struck by the rolling vehicle and killed. All three were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.
Witmore was a contract worker for Labor Ready who was working at the Overton Hotel & Conference Center just before the crash. Johnson and Almaguer were both employees of Best Buy.
Hawthorne suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries in the crash, including a broken arm. He was treated at the University Medical Center and arrested the following day. Hawthorne is currently free on bail and will leave Lubbock for further medical treatment before the trial.
The Texas car accident attorneys at Rasansky Law Firm send their condolences to the families and loved ones of those killed in this tragic crash.
