Texas Toddler Dies In Chain Reaction Crash Caused By Wildfire
Posted on Mar 11, 2011
A five-year-old girl is dead after a wildfire in Midland, Texas, caused a chain-reaction crash on Interstate 20 on February 27.
According to the Midland Reporter-Telegram and the Midland Fire Department, a wildfire started in the median of I-20 on Sunday among the grasses and brush. The smoke from the fire then blew across the interstate causing low visibility for drivers. After one driver came to a stop because they could not see the road, seven cars crashed into one another near the source of the fire.
One car, which carried toddler Cameron Dominguez as well as her brother and uncle, left the interstate and crashed into a ditch were it caught fire. While the uncle was able to pull his nephew from the car, the vehicle was fully engulfed in flames by the time he returned to save his niece. Both the uncle and the nephew are in the hospital being treated for serious injures. In addition, several other drivers and passengers were also injured in the Texas chain-reaction crash.
A number of fires plagued the area surrounding Midland this week because of the unusually windy and dry conditions. The fire that caused the chain reaction crash spread a mile in under 15 minutes. Other fires are responsible for burning tens of thousands of acres of land and burning down a number of homes.
While police are confident that the wildfire was the direct cause of the I-20 car accident, the fatal crash is still under investigation.
