TxDOT Launches Teen Click It or Ticket Campaign
Posted on Feb 23, 2012
In its second year as a statewide program, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has launched its Teen Click It or Ticket Campaign. The program, which will involve over seven hundred high schools and colleges across the state, is designed to educate teens about how easily a seatbelt can save lives.
Two years ago, Texas lawmakers passed legislation that requires drivers and passengers of all ages to buckle their seatbelt. A ticket could cost as much as $250, while teens with graduated licenses could lose driving privileges.
About three hundred teens are killed in Texas car accidents each year. Of that number, almost half were not wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision. At the same time, an estimated 1,425 people across the state were saved by seatbelts last year. The Click It or Ticket campaign hopes to stress that buckling up only takes a moment and could be the difference between death and minor injuries.
The campaign will consist of mailing seatbelt safety posters, lawn banners, and decals to schools throughout Texas. In addition, a totaled pickup truck will tour the major cities including Dallas, Houston, Austin, Arlington, San Antonio, and Huntsville – a truck that was involved in a serious rollover accident last year. The two teens inside the truck were wearing their seatbelts and only received scratches in what could have been a fatal wreck.
