Wrong-Way Drunk Driver Kills Plano Woman On Highway 121

Posted on Apr 27, 2011

A drunk driving speeding down the wrong way of a state highway hit an oncoming car head-on this weekend, leaving one person dead.

According to the Plano Star, a 61-year-old woman from Plano was driving on Highway 121 on Sunday night around 11 p.m. when her vehicle was struck by a car on the wrong side of the road near the intersection of the Freeport Parkway.

When emergency crews and Grapevine Police arrived at the scene of the wrong way driver crash, firefighters had to cut both the woman and the drunk driver from their vehicles before they could receive medical aid. The woman was taken by helicopter to Parkland Memorial where she was listed in critical condition before she was pronounced dead later that night. The man was rushed by ambulance to Harris Methodist Hospital where he is listed in serious condition and being treated for his injuries.

The allegedly drunk driver has been charged with intoxicated manslaughter and is being guarded by police as he recovers in the hospital. His name will be released to the public only after he has been arraigned.

Wrong way accidents are an all too common occurrence in Texas, and because they are often head-on crashes at high speeds, they also often result in serious injury or death. The majority of wrong way crashes are caused by drunk drivers, although some are caused by elderly drivers, confused drivers, or poor road design.
