Who Is To Blame If a Pharmacy Does Not Fill Your Prescription Correctly?

Four Out of Every 1000 Prescriptions Contain a Mistake.

Sloppy handwriting, failure to communicate, and a lazy attitude can all contribute to medical mistakes at your local drug store.  There are many types of mistakes made while treating patients, but mistakes in prescribing and filling patient prescriptions - a form of medical malpractice - is on the rise.

We have some frightening statistics:

  • Pharmacy errors and prescription errors are accounting for tens of thousands of deaths each year.
  • One study cites 5% of prescriptions filled each year are incorrect.
  • Statistics show the potential for adverse drug events in children to be three times higher than for adults.
  • Medical malpractice statistics have shown that doctors make about four prescription mistakes for every thousand prescriptions written.

With these kind of numbers there is a good chance that you or a loved one will be a victim of a medication error by a doctor or a pharmacy.  If you think that you or a loved one may have been a victim of a drug error, do not hesitate to contact us for a free case evaluation.

Ways To Keep Drug Errors or Pharmacy Mistakes To a Minimum:

  • Be an active member of your health care team and take part in every decision about your health care, including what is being prescribed, the amounts, and most importantly, why.
  • Make sure that your doctors know every medication that you are currently taking. This includes prescriptions, over-the-counter medicines and dietary supplements such as vitamins or herbs.
  • Watch out for drugs with similar names and then ask either the pharmacist or doctor why you are taking it. For example, celexa and celebrex are often mixed up, but they serve two very different purposes.
  • Speak up if you have questions or concerns. Keep asking until you receive an answer that makes sense to YOU.
  • Educate yourself about your diagnosis, medical tests you are undergoing and your treatment plan. If the medicines or therapies being prescribed or given to you contradict what you know, make sure you get clarification.
  • Ask a trusted family member or friend to be your advocate and a second pair of ears at key doctor visits.
