Sexual Offenders and Predators Target the Frail and Vulnerable Nursing Home Resident as Easy Marks for Their Own Deviant Nursing Home Sexual Abuse Acts

How Sexual Abuse in Nursing Homes Happens

Elderly nursing home residents are easy prey for sexual offenders. The United States Administration on Aging reported that in a span of one year, 548 complaints were filed on grounds of sexual abuse.  The AOA defined sexual abuse as nonconsensual sexual contact involving an elderly person. This includes rape, sodomy, coerced nudity, and showing sexually explicit material.

Signs and Symptoms of Sexual Abuse

There are certain symptoms and signs elderly nursing home patients display. Some of these signs include:

  • Bruises around the genital area or around the breasts of female residents
  • Unexplained venereal disease or genital infections
  • Abnormal vaginal or anal bleeding
  • Evidence of bloody or torn undergarments
  • The report from an elder complaining of being sexually assaulted

The key is to observe and listen for clues that set off an alarm inside your head.

Who Are the Individuals that Commit Elderly Abuse?

When dealing with sexual abuse against elderly residents, anyone who comes into contact with your loved one should be treated as a potential suspect.  The Nursing Home Abuse Resource Center states elderly abuse can happen from a nursing home staff member, another resident, strangers or even a family member.

  • Nursing Home Staff Member - This often happens when the nursing homes do not perform criminal background checks of potential employees. Without properly checking an individual's background prior to employment, elderly residents can be sitting ducks for sexual offenders. Staff members are trained to detect signs of sexual abuse. If the staff members do not report a sexual incident, it is a sign of negligence.
  • Another Resident - in many cases, females and males inhabit nursing homes. Under these conditions, elderly abuse can happen between two residents. It normally happens when a staff member fails to supervise all activity within the nursing home.  CBS News reported on this incident.
  • A Stranger - This occurs when the nursing home is not adequately equipped with security devices to keep elderly residents safe. A stranger can enter the nursing home when employees are on smoke breaks or if someone fails to secure an outside door after using it.
  • Family Members - Many times marital ties may be the reason for sexual abuse in nursing homes. A nursing home may allow the incident to continue without report because of their relationship. However, if the resident is physically or mentally unable to perform sexual acts, then this may be grounds for sexual abuse.
