Bed-sores, Pressure Sores, Frozen Joints, Foul Odors, Changes of Behavior – Obvious Signs of Nursing Home Neglect – Your Loved One Deserves Justice

Nursing Home Neglect - Lack of Attention and Due Care

Nursing home neglect is the failure to act with the same prudence that a reasonable nursing home owner or operator would have acted under the same or similar set of circumstances. Usually, nursing home negligence occurs when nursing home staff, such as direct care staff, nurses, nurse aides, therapists, dieticians, rehabilitation specialists, and others fail to monitor a resident's condition, fail to appropriately assess a resident's condition, or fails to report a significant change of condition to the resident's physician. We expect the nursing and direct care staff at the nursing home to be the eyes and ears of the doctor and to report any significant changes of condition so appropriate care can be initiated and provided in a timely manner.

Signs and Symptoms

According to the Elder Abuse Foundation there are certain signs and symptoms to watch out for that are strongly indicative of nursing home neglect.

  • Bed-sores, pressure sores or decubitus ulcers from not being re-positioned in bed or being turned;
  • Frozen joints from lack of movement or range of motion exercises;
  • Foul odors of urine possibly indicating infection from dehydration or other illnesses;
  • Odor of feces emanating from the patient's body indicating that resident has not be toileted or cleaned;
  • Signs of physical pain, including thirst and hunger;
  • Changes of behavior indicating possible medication over-dosages, infection, or dehydration;

There are things you can do if you suspect your loved one is being neglected in a nursing home. Go to the nursing home more frequently. Go to the nursing home at different times of the day and on different days of the week. Do not keep a regular schedule. Talk to other residents' family members and ask if they are experiencing any of the same issue as you are. Talk to the Director of Nurses and the Administrator and let your concerns be know. You can always call the state licensing agency and request that a licensing inspection survey be conducted.
