Pedestrians should be able to share the road with other vehicles, but unfortunately, serious pedestrian accidents continue to be extremely common in Texas. In the state, an estimated 1 in every five roadway fatalities involves a pedestrian. There were 5,370 pedestrian accidents reported in the Lone Star State in 2021. These crashes resulted in 843 deaths. This is a nearly 15 percent increase from the previous year. Another 1,467 people were injured in pedestrian crashes in Texas that year. When a pedestrian is hit by a large commercial vehicle, the resulting injuries can be completely catastrophic.
