9-Year-Old Sophia Calhoun Killed in Suspected DWI Accident

VICTORIA, TX (10/19/2014) — 9-year-old Sophia Calhoun has been tragically killed after the vehicle in which she was riding was struck by a suspected drunk driver.

The accident occurred early Sunday morning, October 19th, on Houston Highway (in front of the Victoria Walmart) at around 2:00 a.m. According to reports, 41-year-old Rodolfo Alvarez, of Victoria, crashed his Ford F-250 pickup truck into a blue SUV driven by 38-year-old Yvonne Calhoun. Her nine-year-old daughter, Sophia Calhoun, was also riding in the SUV.
Yvonne Calhoun was transported to Citizens Medical Center with a collapsed lung and a broken shoulder. Her condition has been described as stable. 9-year-old Sophia Calhoun tragically died from her injuries.
Rodolfo Alvarez reportedly told authorities that he had consumed three beers before driving, and that he was not aware of the car crash. Police said Alvarez had a strong odor of alcohol and exhibited slurred speech. Mr. Alvarez was arrested at the scene for driving while intoxicated, but his charges have now been upgraded to one count of murder and one count of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. He is currently being held without bond at the Victoria County Jail.
