Just after 8 a.m., on August 21, the Corpus Christi Police and the US Coast Guards were called to the scene of a workplace accident at the Port of Corpus Christi.
Reports from authorities show that a team of crewmembers was working on the dredging vessel Waymon L Boyd when the vessel struck a submerged pipeline. This caused a massive explosion from the national gas pipeline. Six workers onboard the vessel sustained serious injuries in the incident. All six were rushed to area hospitals for treatment. Five of the size workers were sent to hospitals in San Antonio for more intensive treatment. The bodies of two workers were recovered on August 22. Two other workers remain missing. We would like to offer our condolences to the families of the deceased victims at this time.
Fatal Workplace Accidents in Texas
Every day, millions of Americans head out to their place of employment. When working, we expect a safe and productive environment. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. This is particularly true for people who work construction and are subject to harsh weather, extreme cold and heat, and various other circumstances. When it comes to the construction industry, it is relatively hard to predict the conditions that workers will endure from day-to-day. As a result, these workers are more likely to sustain serious injuries in accidents. More than 185,000 people are injured on the job every year across the United States.
Regrettably, numerous workers suffer devastating injuries that ultimately claim their lives. Every year, workplace accidents claim the lives of thousands of victims across the United States. We see our fair share of devastating losses each year in Texas. Some of the leading cause of workplace accidents in our state include:
- Inadequate training
- Lifting accidents
- Workplace violence
- Hazardous material handling
- Inadequate lighting
- Malfunctioning equipment
- Electrocution incidents
- Slip and fall accidents due to a wet or slippery surface
- Inadequate supply of safety equipment
Although we would like for everyone to be able to recover from their injuries, this is not always the case. Instead, thousands of families are forced to endure the overwhelming pain and suffering of having lost a loved one on the job. Quite often, families are forced to cover tens of thousands of dollars in expenses related to funeral and burial costs and various other damages they face after an unexpected loss. When victims lose their lives on the job, it is crucial that their families contact a wrongful death attorney in Texas at their earliest convenience.
