TEXAS CITY, TX (06/30/2015) — 20-year-old Edson Alaniz Manzano, a state contractor for Biolandscape, was killed when an 18-wheeler veered off the road and struck him.
According to reports, 20-year-old Edson Alaniz Manzano, a state contractor, was killed after an 18-wheeler struck him off Highway 146 at FM 646 in Texas City, Texas on Tuesday morning.
Police stated that Edson Manzano was weed-eating along Highway 146 when an 18-wheeler, driven by 55-year-old Glendall Bickwenher, of Kentucky, veered from the highway and struck Manzano, who died at the scene.
“He actually just drove into the ditch. It looked like he was going to make a right-hand turn,” said one man who was driving directly behind the 18-wheeler.
According to investigators, Bickwenher was driving the empty tanker truck from La Porte to Texas City. They believe he may have had a medical issue.
Manzano was employed at Houston-based Biolandscape, who did not comment on the incident. The Indiana-based company which employed Bickwenher also denied to comment, however, they expressed their deepest sympathy to the family of the victim.
The Texas Department of Public Safety continues to investigate this accident.
You have to wonder what led the truck driver to drive off the highway. Was it an unknown medical issue? Did he fall asleep? Was he distracted? Our thoughts are with the Manzano family at this time, and we hope that a thorough investigation helps determine the exact circumstances which led to this tragic accident.
