Ferris, TX (August 2, 2020) – At approximately 4:40 a.m., on August 1, the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to the scene of a motor vehicle accident on Interstate 45.
Reports provided by DPS troopers show that a silver 2003 Honda Civic was utilizing the middle lane of the roadway while traveling south on the southbound side of Interstate Highway 45. At the same time, a black 2015 Nissan Altima was traveling north in the middle lanes of the southbound side of Interstate Highway 45. After some distance, the wrong-way driver in the Nissan, 22-year-old Jewelissa Acosta, crashed her vehicle into the Honda, which was driven by a 17-year-old girl. The impact of the collision caused the two vehicles to crash into a Dodge pickup truck.
The driver of the Honda was killed instantly in the crash. Acosta was transported via air ambulance to Methodist Hospital Dallas for treatment of life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Dodge, who was identified as 58-year-old Jonathan Raden, was uninjured.
At this time, investigations surrounding the cause of the crash are ongoing.
Our thoughts are with Jewelissa Acosta at this time. We hope for their full recovery.
We would like to offer our condolences to the family of the deceased victim at this time.
Fatal Car Accidents in Texas
Car accidents often have an overwhelming impact on those involved. This is especially true in cases where victims sustain injuries. Each year, more than 17,500 people sustain serious injuries in accidents that require extensive medical treatment and hospitalization. Although we want to believe that everyone recovers from their injuries, this is far from the truth. In fact, thousands of people end up passing away due to injuries sustained in car accidents throughout our state each year.
The unfortunate truth is that more than 10 people lose their lives in motor vehicle accidents here in Texas every day. These incidents add up to more than 3,600 lives lost annually as a result of traffic-related incidents. Many victims suffer fatal injuries in collisions as a result of the negligent or reckless actions of others. Although we can take proactive measures to ensure the lives of those around us are safe from our actions, we cannot prevent others from engaging in negligent actions while driving. In some cases, surviving relatives can contact a wrongful death attorney in Texas to protect their legal rights.
