Shortly after birth, these same doctors should make sure that the child is breathing and that there are no health complications which may lead to serious emergencies such as brain bleeds or the buildup of bilirubin (which can lead to fetal jaundice or kernicterus). Failure to take these precautions can put the baby at risk of developing cerebral palsy, hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, and other serious birth injuries.
