Cow causes freeway accident

CBSDFW reports that a freeway accident on March 21, 2013 was caused by a cow. According to the report, the cow went out onto Marine Creek Parkway at around 1 AM and ended up being struck by several different vehicles. One of those vehicles rolled over as a result of the collision and the driver ended up in the hospital. The six other drivers involved in the accident did not require hospitalization or any medical attention, according to the report.
Animals running out onto the road are sometimes the causes of serious accidents. There are ways that drivers can handle these situations and come out of them without being injured, though tight traffic and a confused animal can oftentimes end up causing a serious crash.

Avoiding the crash.

One of the hardest things about avoiding a crash with an animal is, at the same time, avoiding causing an even bigger accident in the process of doing so. When you’re in one of these situations, the greatest hazard you face is causing a serious pile up by swerving to avoid the animal. Before you do swerve, check the other lanes to make certain that they are clear. Obviously, this is all likely to happen in less than a second, so you might not have time to do that.
This puts a driver in a very bad situation. The general rule with animals is that, if they’re shorter than the front of your car, you are likely going to have to go through them if you cannot swerve into another lane or brake in time. If they’re taller than the front of your car, the animal is likely to cause serious damage when you strike it.
It’s important to keep in mind that you’re more likely to be seriously injured in a crash that results from you trying to avoid an animal than by striking the animal itself. Nobody likes to think about these situations. You do have to keep in mind, however, that there are times when trying to avoid an animal is going to end up seriously injuring or even killing other drivers around you and you’re going to have to make a terrible, if necessary, decision about how to best preserve your safety.
