Should You Get a Hands-Free Device?

A new car accident study released last week found the law that bans using mobile devices while driving has significantly decreased the number of distracted driving car accidents in California over the last two years. The results of the study have many wondering whether these cell phone laws should be adopted in Texas – and whether they should change their own cell phone habits.

Hands-Free is Good, But Not Risk-Free

Hands-Free is Good, But Not Risk-Free

Should you consider getting a hands-free mobile device for use while driving?

  • A hands-free device makes certain that you keep both hands on the wheel at all times – a major issue with using a traditional handheld device.
  • A hands-free device allows you to keep your eyes on the road and prevents you from the most dangerous cell phone activity: text messaging.
  • However, a hands-free device doesn’t mean distraction-free. Several studies have found that it is still distracting to talk on a hands-free device because it takes your mind off of the road.

It seems like the safest option will always be to refrain from talking on the phone when you are behind the wheel – whether or not you have a hands-free device. However, if you speak on the phone while driving, a hands-free device is likely the safer option.
